Martin Black

All at SUBHC were saddened to hear of Martin's tragic death after a long and valiant struggle. It was always a pleasure to welcome Martin to Goodwin for our league games, where he normally umpired the third or fourth teams. He had a fantastic rapport with our players and was especially kind and considerate towards the students, whom he gently but firmly and successfully admonished at the appropriate times. His calm and unflappable manner inevitably cooled down youthful temper and he was never less than 100% in control of the game; he rarely had recourse to carding players and much preferred the quiet word to grandiose and dramatic whistle blowing and card issuing. Martin was also excellent value in the pub after the game, offering insightful and perceptive comment and analysis of the game. He was immensely modest, generous and compassionate and always wanted to know how the job was going and what the family was doing. He recalled older members and asked about their health and whereabouts; he unfailingly remembered to pass on his greetings to club members whom he had not seen and took a genuine interest in the running of the club and of the people within the club. I am proud to have known Martin for over thirty years and, like all at Bankers, will miss him enormously.
